One Planet, One Percent

One Planet, One Percent

As we approach the launch of our first products in the market, you can imagine a lot of exciting and nerve-racking things are happening across the board. But one thing we can say is that through it all, we have continued to stay true to our mission towards a better tomorrow and our 1% For The Planet promise. And there is one thing that always comes up without fail - plastic.

1 million. This represents the number of plastic bottles that are sold around the world each minute. Even more alarming, a whopping 80% of these bottles never get recycled - meaning it can take up to 450 years for 800,000 bottles to decompose. Scary to imagine, right? From manufacturing to use and disposal, plastic bottles are undeniably unsustainable. They are made from non-renewable fossil fuels, and the production of a single liter bottle of water produces over 10 balloons of CO2, which directly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

At SYP, we’ve had a lot of conversations about how we play into the world of plastic consumption and this has led to some fascinating realizations!

Here’s our line of thinking:

For us, this is a huge win.
Along the way we’ve come to face the difficult realization that we can’t change everything at once. Considering the vast implications of global emissions (which only continue to grow) this can be a bit scary. However, we are doing our best to ensure that we only use recycled plastic when absolutely necessary for our product. In SYP’s case, the thin layer of plastic in the sachet is crucial, otherwise it would be impossible to maintain the texture of our products and maintain their prolonged shelf-life. And the last thing we want is to create more food waste.

We often reflect on our mission and vision for SYP, and it’s critical for us to do as much as we can to reduce our impact while staying true to our product. That’s why we’ve pledged 1% of sales to charities committed to the preservation and restoration of our planet.

But we can’t do it alone! It’s us, it’s you. One SYP, one percent.
